A Weekend Retreat in Alberta

As president of a technologies company in the bustling city of Calgary, Bryan dreamed of building another home. He needed a retreat to which he could easily escape the city and relax during long weekends and holidays. After purchasing land in the scenic town of Olds, an hour outside of Calgary, Bryan began searching for the ideal home design for his weekend retreat.

Bryan’s interest in the traditional style of timber frame homes was not new. However, upon discovering Riverbend Timber Framing, he found himself immediately impressed by the unique building system and one-of-a-kind design concepts. Attracted to the dynamic, European style of the Sonoma Hills architectural design (shown above), the executive contacted Riverbend’s sales manager, Brent Cooper. It was time to get started on Bryan’s version of the Sonoma Hills.

“When Bryan came to us, he already had his mind set on the Sonoma Hills plan,” said Brent. “With the concept’s extra square footage above the garage and emphasis on outdoor living, Bryan knew he had found the design that spoke to his lifestyle.”

Working with his project’s designer, Bryan decided to add a basement to his version of the Sonoma Hills. By doing so, he could incorporate extra bedrooms, a lower level garage, and specialty spaces. The latter included a studio and even a craft room. In addition, the living space above the main level garage became its own apartment home retreat, complete with a kitchen and dining room for weekend guests.

Bryan is excited to begin the next phase in his project, especially as the design process nears completion. Both the manufacturing of his home’s timber frame and initial construction are scheduled to begin in the spring of 2014.
