DESIGN PROCESS
The client and their architect were searching for a timber frame company to collaborate with on their project: a barn style addition for their existing home. Their design concept was at the schematic level, and they needed a timber frame company to help them take it to the next level. Recognizing Riverbend’s expertise in the timer frame industry, the architect engaged Riverbend to further develop the structural scope and determine the costs for the project.
Riverbend engaged in detailed discussions with both the client and the architect to refine the vision, and create a 3D model of the addition, incorporating structural data to accurately estimate the hard costs of the material package. Because this project’s scope included all Riverbend products (timbers, structural insulated panels (SIPs), and insulated concrete forms (ICFs), it was logical that the Riverbend Structural Solutions team work directly with the architect on the development of the structural permit set.

Thinking outside the box, the team designed a covered connector tunnel from the existing home to the addition, meaning the addition would be considered an integral part of the main structure rather than an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), allowing for greater flexibility and design freedom. The addition boasts a plethora of versatile living spaces designed to accommodate the family’s diverse interests and activities. An exercise room, bar, open living room, and theater room with comfortable seating for 15 on the main level provide ample opportunities for relaxation and entertainment. Meanwhile, a music room, gaming loft, and balcony on the upper level offer a retreat for creative pursuits and leisure.
By opening one side of the upper level to the main living area below, the design creates a dramatic double-height ceiling effect, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and grandeur. This feature not only adds visual interest, but also fosters a sense of continuity and flow between the different levels of the space, while maximizing natural light and views.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

finish infuses the space with high-end craftsmanship,
showcasing the beauty and durability of natural wood. - Modern Hammerbeam Design: The hammerbeam
design with a modern steel rod serve as the focal point
of the addition, adding structural integrity and dramatic
architectural interest to the space. - Custom Timber Frame Stairs: Three flights of custom
timber frame stairs, all manufactured and cut from
the Riverbend shop, serve as a stunning focal point
within the space. Meticulously crafted with precision
and expertise, these stairs showcase the incredible
craftsmanship while providing functional access
between levels. - SIP Panels: Structural insulated panels were
seamlessly integrated into the design, providing
superior insulation and energy efficiency. This
innovative construction method enhances the comfort
and sustainability of the addition while reducing
energy costs. - ICFs: Insulated concrete forms were used to
enhance the durability and energy efficiency of the
structure. These robust building materials provide a
