Treating your Timber Framing

Posted on Nov 6, 2012

When you take a look at traditional timber framing, it is easy to see how the timbers both within and out make a significant impact on a home’s complete look and feel. Determining the impression you want your timbers to convey both now and years down the road will help determine how you treat the exposed wood on the inside and outside of your home.

Natural Timbers

Exterior Look and Feel

A timber frame home’s first impression to the world is its exterior. Do you want your exterior timbers to weather and age with the home or do you want them to have the same appeal ten years later that they had when they were first raised? For some people, their choice is to let their originally oil-coated timbers, age naturally and weather away the finish over time. When they make this choice, they must bear in mind that the wood will eventually have to be sanded and re-finished or replaced. For others who are looking to maintain the original look and feel of their timbers, a stain finish provides the protection and enhancement to achieve it. Clients also have the flexibility of choosing if their finish has color or is clear—showcasing the wood’s natural beauty. They will also have to decide on the quality of stain used—the higher the quality, the more years that can pass between re-staining and the better protected a home is from heavy rain and snow.

Dark Timbers

Interior Look and Feel

While the factors of aging and outside elements that come into play with choosing your exterior finishes is not applicable within, the choices for your interiors can still be affected by UV lights. Some wish to stain their interior timbers darker or warmer to dramatize their spaces in a more modern approach. While we have also seen Riverbend clients who decide that the natural look of their Oak or Douglas fir connections reflect their traditional style more accurately. In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of clients who choose darker stains for their interiors. While this is reflective of current trends, it is completely up to you to choose the interior stain that is representative of your personal style.
