timber frame craftsman style home

Tom and Mary were an outdoorsy couple who had a dream. Their dream included a custom timber frame home on a homestead that allowed them to fly-fish whenever they pleased and to enjoy gorgeous country sunsets every night. After living the big city life in Los Angeles for 30 years, they couldn’t wait to move away from their busy lifestyle and start anew on the Colorado countryside.

Upon purchasing a 35-acre parcel of land with views of Mount Garfield, Colorado National Monument, Grand Mesa and Pinon Mesa, they packed up their life in California and moved to Colorado to begin the process of building their dream home.

The couple knew they wanted a Craftsman-style timber frame design, but they also knew that having a personal interaction with the company they chose was important in bringing their dream home to life. Tom and Mary chose this classic early 20th century Craftsman style plan (shown above) from architect R. Pfotenhauer. This plan included a large bungalow style timber porch, deep overhangs and intricate timber truss work in the home’s eaves.

With the building process finally underway, the couple was amazed how quickly and smoothly the Riverbend building system went together, including SIP walls for energy efficiency. “All of the people at Riverbend went out of their way to make sure we were happy and satisfied with the house design, timbers and structural insulated panels,” Tom remembers.

The final product included floor finishes and trim chosen to be true to the Arts and Crafts period, maple and cherry woods for the kitchen, and an attached media room and three-car garage. Leaving Tom and Mary with a gorgeous Craftsman style timber home that is completely one-of-a-kind.

Architectural Highlight: Craftsman Style

Although some would argue that a traditional timber frame home is a unique home style all by itself, Tom and Mary are not alone in choosing to incorporate a popular architectural style, such as Craftsman, into their design. Architectural styles often help define the look and feel of the home from the roof (Craftsman roofs tend to have shallow slopes) to the shape and configuration of windows, the outdoor space design, and inclusion of decorative accents. Riverbend’s design team can help you find the overall design style that fits your vision best.
