about Riverbend

If you want to work with people who are not only great at what they do but also love doing it, you’ve come to the right place.

Riverbend Timber Framing is made up of people who think timber framing is cool and want to spread the word. Helping people like you discover the beauty, history, strength and sustainability of timber frame construction is what makes it fun to come to work in the morning. You might say we’re timber framing evangelists.

Riverbend got its start back in 1979 when Frank Baker, a guy who loved the idea of living lightly on the land, brought his wife Brenda to Blissfield, Michigan. Inspired by his grandfather’s timber frame home and eager to keep his family’s water and energy consumption low, Frank built the first Riverbend timber frame: a three-bedroom Dutch colonial heated by a wood stove and served by a composting toilet. (Brenda still shakes her head at that one. By all accounts, she was a very good sport.) A barn on the Baker property was converted to a timber shop, and Riverbend Timber Framing was born.

Thirty years later Riverbend operates out of two buildings in Michigan – the main office and the shop – which bookend the village of Blissfield, population 2,600. North of the border, Riverbend Canada is based in Calgary, Alberta. The company has grown from a handful of timber frame faithful to more than 80, including a design staff that gets to draw beautiful homes for people like you all day long. Over the years we’ve converted timber and talent into more than 2,000 structures, including homes, restaurants, offices, churches, retail shops and clubhouses. What can we say? We think timber frames are cool. We’re already excited about yours!
