Timber Framing 101
What are the differences? As many are aware, there are three different types of construction methods in the Log & Timber Frame industry: timber framing, post and beam, and log construction. They have different appearances, values, and structural elements.
|
Timber Framing is:
- A building system using large timbers for posts, beams, joists, rafters, purlins and braces to support the structure
- Components are joined together with mortises and tenons View Sample
- Mortises and tenons are secured together with wooden pegs, also called dowels and trunnels
- Efficient use of wood resources

|
Post & Beam Construction is:
- A building system using large timbers for
posts and beams to support the structure
- Posts and beams are face-cut and joined together with visible steel plates
- The simple timber cuts and steel plates
are secured together with exposed
through-nuts and bolts
|
Log Construction is:
- A simple, familiar building
system with logs for walls
and beams
- More logs
- More maintenance
