Timber Framing 101

What are the differences? As many are aware, there are three different types of construction methods in the Log & Timber Frame industry: timber framing, post and beam, and log construction. They have different appearances, values, and structural elements.


Timber Framing is:

Wooden posts and beams come together with traditional wooden peg joinery
  • A building system using large timbers for posts, beams, joists, rafters, purlins and braces to support the structure
  • Components are joined together with mortises and tenons View Sample
  • Mortises and tenons are secured together with wooden pegs, also called dowels and trunnels
  • Efficient use of wood resources

Post & Beam Construction is:

In post and beam construction, steel is used to connect the pieces
  • A building system using large timbers for
    posts and beams to support the structure
  • Posts and beams are face-cut and joined together with visible steel plates
  • The simple timber cuts and steel plates
    are secured together with exposed
    through-nuts and bolts

 


Log Construction is:

Log home construction requires more maintenance and material
  • A simple, familiar building
    system with logs for walls
    and beams
  • More logs
  • More maintenance
